On 21 November 1855, in her life-long endeavour to preserve Carlyle for higher things and to save him (and so incidentally herself) from the consequences of his own irritable temperament, Mrs. Carlyle undertook the task of interviewing the Income Tax Commissioners and appealing against their assessment of her husband's literary earnings.
