Mahaffy was a versatile and original classical scholar, who became a fellow of Trinity College, Dublin, in 1864, a senior fellow in 1899, and at last in 1914, in his seventy-sixth year, Provost. His reputation as a wit and raconteur was high, but it made him many enemies.
