The friends mentioned in the opening paragraph are Thomas Woolner (1825-92), sculptor and poet; James Spedding (1808-1881), the editor of Bacon's works, and F. T. Palgrave (1824-1897), now remembered as compiler of the Golden Treasury (1861), in which he had some help from Tennyson.
