Note 005
by Joachim C. Fest

Olden, Hitler. Elsewhere in the same work he says:

'The clumsy longwindedness of such sentences seems to bespeak an artless lack of confidence in language as such, a fear that it may not be equal to its task of statement and explanation, an anxious plea for understanding. An odd contrast to the blustering threats of violence, the sword, the gallows.'

The stylistic errors quoted are taken from an anonymous, manifestly communist tract, 'Das Selbstportrait Adolf Hitler's. Deutschland erwache! Deutschland lache!' (Berlin, 1931).

From Chapter 3 ,The Fuhrer , Part 1 of The Face Of The Third Reich by J.C. Fest
