Note 012
by Joachim C. Fest

The remark comes from Halder (Bor, 'Gesprache mit Halder'). For Hitler's distrust of his generals, whom he hated because of their absolute necessity 'au fond', see the chapter in the present book 'General von X'; also Zoller, Hitler privat: 'The General Staff is the last Freemasons' lodge which unfortunately I have forgotten to dissolve.' The description of the General Staff as 'the last Freemasons' lodge' occurs elsewhere, for example Bor, Gesprache mit Halder.

From Chapter 5 ,Victor and Vanquished , Part 1 of The Face Of The Third Reich by J.C. Fest -- See further Notes
