Note 038
by Joachim C. Fest

See IMT, XLI, 3569-PS. In a 'codicil' to his testament Hitler wrote:

'In this long and hard struggle the people and the Wehrmacht have given of their best. The sacrifice has been enormous. But my trust has been abused by many. Throughout the whole war, treachery and treason have undermined the will to oppose. For that reason I have not been permitted to lead my people to victory. The General Staff of the Army is not to be compared with the General Staff of the First World War ...'
