Hitler's contempt for the generals was due not least to his aversion for the calculated reluctance to take risks to which the officer corps inclined by temperament and education; he was irritated by arrogant professionalism and ideological reserve. So far as the Army was concerned, he explained that its unfinished tasks were not so much a question 'of professional ability as of the need for glowing professions of National Socialism' (ibid.).
